The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament: A Crystal Coast Tradition
Every June, the waterfront of Morehead City transforms into one of the most exciting scenes in the sportfishing world. Since its inception in 1957, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has grown into the largest nonprofit fishing tournament in the world, blending world-class angling with a commitment to charitable giving. Now in its 68th year, it remains a point of pride for Carteret County and the entire Crystal Coast.
Among the largest and oldest sport fishing tournaments in the country, the Big Rock calls avid deep-sea fishermen to North Carolina's Crystal Coast for a full week of angling and community celebration. In 2025 alone, the tournament featured 272 teams, saw 420 billfish released — including 238 blue marlin — and awarded more than $6 million in prize money.
The main event isn't the only reason to get excited. The tournament actually encompasses three separate competitions that together form the Big Rock Triple Crown, a championship series introduced in 2024. The Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) Tournament — the largest lady angler event in the world — is named in tribute to the late Keli Wagner, a cherished Morehead City community member who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2008. The event proudly supports local cancer organizations and is an all-release tournament. For 2026, the KWLA kicks things off on June 5–6.
The flagship Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament follows, running June 5–14, 2026, with six days of competitive offshore fishing for some of the biggest prize money in the sport.
The Big Rock Kids Billfish Tournament rounds out the Triple Crown, designed to inspire the next generation of anglers while raising funds for children's charities. The Kids Tournament is scheduled for July 8–11, 2026.
The Triple Crown series awards points across all three tournaments, with boats competing for custom championship rings designed by Bailey's Fine Jewelry — and bragging rights that last all year. Whether you're a competitor or a spectator, this is one Crystal Coast tradition you won't want to miss.

Beaufort Police Department Launches Bike Patrol Unit
Something new is coming to the streets of Beaufort for visitors and residents alike. The Beaufort Police Department has officially launched a new Bike Patrol Unit, announced earlier this month. Officers underwent a rigorous training process to prepare for the program, which was made possible in part through the generous support of the Big Rock Foundation.
Hurricane Preparedness Expo Coming to Morehead City
Carteret County residents have a valuable opportunity to get ready for the upcoming storm season. Carteret County Emergency Services is encouraging the community to attend the annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo, set for May 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, 3505 Arendell St. in Morehead City.
The free event serves as a one-stop resource for storm preparation, bringing together local, state and federal experts to help residents, businesses and families get ready for the 2026 hurricane season. Attendees can expect presentations from meteorologists, emergency managers, county staff and community organizations beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Resources available at the expo include a hurricane season outlook from the National Weather Service, evacuation zone look-ups and Special Needs Assistance Program registration. Representatives from N.C. Emergency Management, Carteret County departments and other organizations will be on hand to answer questions.
The expo is co-organized by Carteret County Emergency Services, Carteret County government and the National Weather Service office in Morehead City.
